Methodology

How GovSpendTrail builds federal spending pages.

GovSpendTrail is designed as a source-backed research layer for federal awards, vendors, agencies, subawards, opportunities, categories, and recompete candidates.

GovSpendTrail preserves original public-record fields, then standardizes identifiers, agencies, recipients, dates, categories, and award references for research pages.

Automated summaries only use available record fields. They must not infer fraud, illegality, corruption, intent, performance quality, or wrongdoing.

Identity resolution

Vendors use UEI first, then CAGE, legacy DUNS, and only then normalized name plus address fallback.

Award resolution

Awards use USAspending generated IDs, SAM contract keys, PIID/agency/IDV, FAIN/agency, or URI/agency.

Opportunity freshness

Active opportunity pages require tighter freshness windows than static agency, vendor, or category pages.

Safe labels

Signals use neutral labels such as limited competition, large modification, expiring award, or missing source fields.
